The Ukrainian interim government says its forces have retaken the security service headquarters in the eastern city of Kramatorsk. "Now it is under the control of the National Guard," Ukraine’s Interior Ministry said in a statement released on Saturday. The Ukrainian army’s assault on Kramatorsk started Friday night. The military operation in the city also resumed on Saturday morning. Russian sources say at least 10 people were killed and some 30 injured during the overnight raids. "There is gunfire and clashes around Kramatorsk…. What we are facing in the Donetsk region and in the eastern regions is not just some kind of short-lived uprising, it is in fact a war," Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) General Vasyl Krutov said. On April 25, the Kiev government launched the second phase of its controversial “anti-terrorist operations” in the eastern and southern parts of Ukraine to drive out pro-Russia activists from the region. On May 2, Ukrainian troops expanded their operations, with the acting government promising to continue its operations against pro-Moscow protesters. According to Ukraine's acting Interior Minister Arsen Avakov, army troops have also taken control of a television station in Kramatorsk. Pro-Kremlin demonstrators are now controlling a dozen towns and cities in eastern Ukraine, demanding integration into neighboring Russia. Pro-Russian protests gained momentum in Ukraine after Crimea declared independence from the former Soviet state and formally applied to become part of the Russian Federation following a referendum in March.
